Placement Criteria

Mathematics

Current fifth graders will be placed based on multiple data points collected throughout the year, including the Ready Math Unit 3 Assessment, Evidence of Exceeding Grade Level Mathematics Standards according to the Standards-Based Report Card, and iReady Diagnostic scores. It is expected that students recommended for honors are either meeting or exceeding expectations on the NJSLA**. 

Students must meet two of the following three criteria to be recommended for Math 6 Honors:

  • Evidence of Exceeding Grade Level Math Standards according to the Standards-Based Report Card
  • At least 30 points on the Ready Math Unit 3 Assessment
  • Late 5th Grade Level or higher on the iReady Diagnostic

Students who are not recommended for honors will be placed in Math 6A.*

 

Current Math 6 students who meet the following criteria will be placed in Math 7 Honors (7th Grade Pre Algebra)

Students who do not meet the above criteria will be placed in Math 7A.*

A sixth grader may be eligible to skip Math 7 and move into Algebra 1 Honors. To be eligible, they must have:

  • Completed at least 90% of their homework
  • Passed the District Algebra Readiness Assessment

Current Math 7 students who meet the following criteria will be placed in Algebra 1 Honors

              Students who do not meet the above criteria will be placed in Pre-Algebra.*

 

Current Algebra 1 Honors students will be placed in Geometry Honors after successful completion of Algebra 1. Students are expected to pass the NJSLA** to advance to Geometry at FMS.

Current Geometry Honors students will be placed in Algebra 2 Honors after successful completion of Geometry

Language Arts

Current fifth graders will be placed based on multiple data points collected throughout the year, including the Magnetic Reading Unit 5 Assessment, Evidence of Exceeding Grade Level Language Arts Literacy Standards according to the Standards-Based Report Card, and iReady diagnostic scores. It is expected that students recommended for honors are either meeting or exceeding expectations on the NJSLA**. 

Students must meet two of the following three criteria to be recommended for ELA 6 Honors:

  • Evidence of Exceeding Grade Level Standards in Language Arts Literacy according to the Standards-Based Report Card
  • At least 5 out of 6 points on the End of Year Narrative Writing Sample
  • Late 5th Grade Level or higher on the iReady Diagnostic

Students who are not recommended for honors will be placed in ELA 6A.*

 

Current sixth graders who meet the following criteria will be placed in ELA 7 Honors.

Successful completion of ELA 6 Honors

Students who do not meet the above criteria will be placed in ELA 7A.*

 

Current seventh graders who meet the following criteria will be placed in ELA 8 Honors.

Grade of A-

iReady Late 6th Grade Level

ELA 7 Honors

Successful completion of ELA 7 Honors

 

Students who do not meet the above criteria will be placed in ELA 8A.*

*What if I do not get the placement I want?

Students who do not meet the minimum requirements for a course may appeal the decision using this form
